Michael is the State Greens Member for the inner-west Brisbane electorate of Maiwar. Before politics, he worked as a public interest environmental lawyer.

Michael is a longstanding advocate for a health-based approach to drug policy, including fair, safe and affordable access to medicinal cannabis, and legalisation more broadly. He is pushing for reforms to consider medicinal cannabis use in Queensland's drug driving laws, and has moved amendments in State Parliament to focus on driver impairment levels rather than the mere presence of THC.

Michael and the Greens continue to campaign for appropriate legislation to reduce stigma, and support the well-being and safety of patients, practitioners, and the general public.
