Dr. Adel Zarei earned his Ph.D. from Leiden University in the Netherlands, where he specialised in the molecular mechanisms underlying plant defence and secondary metabolism. He went on to spend a decade as a Research Associate at the University of Guelph, Canada focusing on plant stress physiology. His scientific passion centres on plant secondary metabolites, many of which hold significant pharmaceutical value.
In 2017, Dr. Zarei transitioned into the cannabis industry, serving as a Scientific Advisor and Cannabis Micropropagation Expert. He designed and established multiple cannabis micropropagation laboratories for licensed producers, securing several government grants to support this work. His research led to the development of specialised tissue‑culture media and techniques for commercial‑scale cannabis micropropagation and germplasm conservation, with findings published in respected peer‑reviewed journals.
Throughout his scientific career, Dr. Zarei has authored more than twenty‑two peer‑reviewed publications covering plant stress physiology, secondary metabolism, and plant pathology.
Dr. Zarei is a key member of the PharmaCrop leadership team, serving as Chief Operating Officer at PharmaCrop Pty. Ltd. in Queensland, Australia. In this role, he oversees end‑to‑end operations, from seed cultivation through to the final production of medical‑grade cannabis products, ensuring quality, compliance, and operational excellence across the organisation.
