Senator Peter Whish-Wilson

Australian Greens Senator for lutruwita/Tasmania

Peter made the transition from being a community leader in the campaign to stop one of the world’s largest pulp mills being built in the Tamar Valley to Greens Senator for lutruwita/Tasmania in 2012 when he replaced Bob Brown in the Senate.

He is an economist by training and taught finance and economics at the University of Tasmania. Since entering parliament, he has fought hard to protect our oceans and wild places and continues to advocate for real action on climate change. He has also been a fierce critic of excessive corporate power and has advocated for an equitable economic system that sees a strong role for government in serving the needs of everyone, not just the wealthy few, and providing the best chance to meet the challenges of the future. His work in parliament has helped achieve strong multinational tax avoidance laws and successfully establish the Royal Commission into banking, resulting in once-in-a-generation legislative reform.

Peter is a staunch supporter of medicinal cannabis and has advocated for both its health benefits and the agricultural opportunities it offers. He has spoken in parliament and at conferences about this and his successful personal use of medicinal cannabis. He is currently participating in the following Senate inquiry: Opportunities for the development of a hemp industry in Australia

He has Australian Greens portfolio responsibility for Agriculture, Healthy Oceans, Science, Industry & Innovation, Trade & Tourism and Waste & Recycling.
