His Excellency Xiao Qian has served as the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Australia since January 2022. A career diplomat with nearly four decades of experience, Ambassador Xiao has held senior positions across Asia, Europe, and the United States, reflecting his deep expertise in international relations and regional affairs.
Since joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1986, he has served in the Chinese embassies in Ethiopia, India, the United States, and the Philippines, and in key leadership roles within the Ministry’s Department of Asian Affairs. His ambassadorial appointments include postings to Hungary (2012–2015) and Indonesia (2017–2021), before his current position in Canberra.
Ambassador Xiao’s tenure in Australia coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He has emphasised the importance of mutual understanding, constructive dialogue, and cooperation across trade, education, and people-to-people exchange, while managing differences with a long-term perspective.
In public forums and media engagements, he has spoken extensively on China’s development path and foreign policy priorities, seeking to enhance bilateral trust and regional stability.
He brings to his role a wealth of diplomatic experience and a commitment to fostering a stable and forward-looking China–Australia relationship.
